The student spends five days per week in the classroom and attends weekly seminars on campus. The student observes, participates, teaches and assumes responsibility for a class under the guidance of the cooperating teacher and college personnel. A supervised student teaching experience in which theory is applied to direct practice in the field. The experience allows the student to engage in curriculum development, implement curriculum-based assessment, engage in various instructional and classroom management strategies, develop materials based on assessed learner needs, use media to enhance learner comprehension of concepts and evaluate learner outcomes. The student must contact the special education supervisor of student teachers to arrange the experience. Deadlines for the arrangement of an experience are Feb. 15 for a summer or a fall assignment and Oct. 15 for a spring assignment. Prerequisite: SED 500, SED 501, SED 502, SED 503, advisor approved concentration courses, substance abuse, child abuse, and the aids communicable disease workshop, plus concurrent enrollment in SED 505.
