This course models the principles of an inquiry approach to the teaching of science to all students in grades K-6 with an emphasis on integrating the instruction with other curricular areas. Practical approaches to implementing NSTA and New York State Learning Standards in Math, Science, and Technology are emphasized. Strategies for contextualization and integration of the instruction to the student's world will also be presented. Techniques and research concerning issues of gender equity and diversity as they apply to science and technology will be addressed. The course includes a theoretical and research foundation, a process approach, a laboratory focus, computer assisted instruction, and pre-service teaching. Problem solving and the focus on a process of inquiry are emphasized. A multimedia approach to assessment is also included. Course sequence consists of eight weeks of methods and laboratory instruction, four weeks of pre-service teaching approved by the instructor and a debriefing of the pre-service experience during the remaining weeks. Open to CSR majors only. Pre- or co-requisite: EDU 504. Fall, Spring

This course facilitates assessment based upon students' portfolios of materials accumulated throughout their courses of study in the program. An orientation to the portfolio process occurs in the beginning of the semester. Teams of faculty members will evaluate such materials presented by students as exemplary lessons, units, teacher-made materials, children's works (used with their permission), etc. Competency is documented in the areas of Curriculum Development, Instructional Practices, Classroom Management, Content Mastery in the PreK-6 Curriculum, Classroom Environment, and Assessment. Students will also present portfolios to the College community. Co-or prerequisite: ELE 546. Fall, Spring

A field experience, selected in cooperation with faculty in the department of Teacher Education, designed to meet the indivdual needs of the student. Possible alternatives i include in-service supervised teaching experiences, presentations of simulated teaching experiences, supervised advanced tutorials, and a reading practicum. A syllabus for this experience must be devised with cooperation and approval of the faculty advisor and the course mentor prior to registration for the course. Open to CSD students only. Offered occasionally by individual request.
