This course provides students with practical approaches to implementing NCTM and New York State Learning Standards for Math, Science, and Technology. Includes strategies for teaching mathematics to elementary school children, including exceptional children, and for integrating mathematics instruction with other content subjects. Techniques and research concerning issues of gender equity and diversity as they apply to mathematics and technology will be addressed. Incorporation of a literature-based approach will also be stressed. Problem-solving, inquiry and math understanding are emphasized. The course sequence consists of eight weeks of methods and laboratory instruction, four weeks of pre-service teaching approved by the instructor and adebriefing of the pre-service experience during the remaining weeks. A semester of student teaching in elementary classrooms. Includes students' demonstration of skills, strategies, models of teaching and uses of educational media; provides supervised practice in teaching, and involvement in community study and activities; stresses development of communication, articulation skills, and leadership skills. Weekly seminars accompany full-time classroom experiences. Prerequisites are completion of the child abuse, substance abuse, AIDS workshop and OPT requirements,21 credits of graduate course work at The College of Saint Rose including EDU 504, ELE 505, ELE 507, ELE 562, ELE 566, EPY 500 and RDG 561. Offered by arrangement with the Teacher Education Field Placement Office. Applications must be made by Feb. 1for those who wish to register for fall; by Oct. 1 for those who wish to register for spring. Each student will receive two consecutive placements: one-half semester in the lower grades (K-3) and one-half semester in the upper grades (4-6). Taken concurrently with ELE 550.
