Topics include: the historical development of the French language, standard vs. non-standard French, language variation and sociological factors affecting language use. Readings include plays by such representative dramatists as Giraudoux, Sartre, Camus, Ionesco and Beckett. Among poets considered are Valéry, Apollinaire, Ponge, and the Surrealists.
