Course Description: An overview of the interrelationships, evolutionary development and taxonomy of representative species from the major divisions of the plant kingdom. Photosynthesis and respiratory will be discussed along with other physiological processes and morphology will be presented as it relates to function and taxonomic classification. Economic importance of plants and current topics such as biotechnology will be presented from an ecological and environmental impact perspective. Open to all Biology, Chemistry, Physical Sciences, pre-OT, pre-PT, pre-Optometry, pre-Podiatry, Clinical Lab Sciences, and Forensic Science majors only. Course Description: As may be agreed upon by the student and the faculty supervisor, students may be trained in such things as the development and implementation of a hypothesis; the creation of experimental design; the performance of experiments; the role of primary scientific literature; the critical analysis of scientific data; and the reporting of scientific data. The specific experiences of a student will vary depending upon the student's interests and the faculty supervisor's research expertise. Course Description: A survey of the topic of microbial pathogenesis. Concepts examined include mechanisms of microbial invasion, disease mechanisms, host response to infection, virulence, drug resistance, and immunity. Pre-requisites: BIO 335, CHE 224. 4 lecture hours per week. Course Description: This course expands the basic knowledge base obtained in BIO 335. Topics include protein structure and function, enzyme kinetics, signal transduction, metabolism and gene expression. The concepts discussed will be applied to pathological situations using medical case studies and the scientific literature related to relevant disease states so a to obtain an understanding of the contribution of biochemical processes to both health and disease.
