This course is a general introduction to geographic information systems. Students learn how geographic information systems can be organized, about the kinds of operations that are possible with such systems, and about the problems of developing and using the systems. The emphasis in the course is on problem solving, and lectures are combined with a series of problem-solving exercises. The exercises involve the application of several kinds of computer software for geographic problems. Students can expect to develop a comprehensive background that is widely useful in the development and application of geographic information systems, as well as some basic skills in the use of the system.
