POLISCI 277: Making a Global World
4.00 Credits
University of Massachusetts Amherst
The course is an overview of how the world went from being a set of very distinct regions, some unaware of others, c. 1450 to the highly connected world of today where cross-region interaction is so thick that it makes sense to speak of "globalization." It pays attention to the changes in ideas, social beliefs and conventions (particularly in the political and economic realms), and human use of physical objects and the natural environment more generally to understand the rise of interconnection in 1870-1914, the decline between 1914-1945, and the reemergence of strong interconnection after 1970. (Gen.Ed. HS)

POLISCI 297T: ST-Anarch&Rev:SpanishCivilWar
3.00 Credits
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Anarchism offers a critique of existing societies, a vision of an egalitarian, non-hierarchical alternative, and a theory of social revolution. This course introduces aspects of that communalist-anarchist tradition, especially its positive, reconstructive, social analysis. We will examine anarchist visions of society and perspectives on social change as a background to understanding the development of the anarcho-syndicalist movement and the process of social revolution in Spain (culminating in the revolutionary movement of 1936-37 during the Civil War). Through examining the practice of anarchist revolution in Spain, and contrasting it with liberal and Marxist approaches to change, students should also gain some new perspectives on contemporary issues.

POLISCI 297W: ST-Intro:Women&Politics in USA
3.00 Credits
University of Massachusetts Amherst
This course examines women's political incorporation in the United States primarily, but not exclusively, with respect to electoral politics. We explore women's pre-suffrage political activities before delving into the campaign for women's suffrage. We study the effects of achieving suffrage on women's political behavior during the period immediately following their achievement of the right to vote and beyond. The relationship between women and party politics will be probed before discussing the challenges women still face as candidates in state and federal legislatures in the U.S. The extent to which women's participation in campaigns and elections makes a substantive difference in policy making is considered. Subsequent discussions examine the role women's organizations currently play in expanding women's political representation in the U.S.
