Among the subject areas included are the location of cities, the location of activity within cities, residential land use, evaluation of the urban economic base and urban public finance. Emphasis is placed upon evaluating models for their ability to explain economic patterns within urban areas and assessing their policy prescriptions for problems such as urban sprawl, slums, poverty and fiscal difficulties. This course is required of all students seeking New York state teacher certification. This course will provide an introduction to education and the profession of teaching in a democratic society. It will explore teaching from a practical as well as a theoretical point of view. An introduction to the historical, philosophical and sociological approach to the study of education in the United States will be studied while examining cultural pluralism and its impact on the American system of education. Multicultural education, the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, teaching students with disabilities and other aspects of our diverse society will be discussed. A required field practicum in a local school will provide the setting to observe and work with students from diverse backgrounds.
