Audacious Austen! Writing in the early 1800¿s, Jane Austen wrote commentary so biting, honest, and courageous that critic A.L. Rowse has said that being known by her ¿must have been like encountering the Last Judgment,¿ yet Austen was content to publish her novels anonymously and doubted their literary value. Join us as we examine Austen¿s life and times as she skewers husband-hunting, landed gentry, social-climbing, and those who make, break, and enforce the rules in three of her great novels: Northhanger Abbey in which a would be ingénue searches desperately for things that go bump in the night; Emma, wherein Emma Woodhouse attempts to turn another young woman into a home improvement project, and Pride and Predjudice, which covers everything the mother with too many daughters needs to know about eligible bachelors. The workshop meets for two hours on 4 successive Monday evenings. (CED 357 701) Instructor: Ann Clark - Moore Mondays, February 23 through March 2, 9, 16, 2009 6:00 ¿ 8:00 pm Cost: $50

Shirret Rug Making Shirret (pronounced ¿sure ¿ ray¿) is a old time rug making technique which combines shirring and crochet. Shirret is a great way to recycle all types of fabric into rugs and mats. Using shirret technique, fabric is first cut into ¾ inch wide strips. These strips are shirred onto a special needle, and are then crocheted off the needle, on edge, creating a thick, durable mat. In this class students will learn how to create a small shirret mat using wool fabric. The technique can then be used to create a variety of items utilizing recycled fabrics. Materials including a shirret hook, cord and wool fabric will be provided. A current knowledge of basic crochet is a requirement. This workshop is limited to the first 8 people who enroll. This workshop is brought to you through a partnership with Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) located in Canton, NY.
