Swing is King! Swing is one of the most endearing and genuinely "American" of the ballroom dances. It can be slow and relaxed or fast and furious. The music varies from "In The Mood" to "Zoot Suit Riot". This is a class for people serious about wanting to do the dance and do it right. A prior knowledge of the basic step and an ability to hear timing in music will be a great help but not a prerequisite. The energy expended will increase as the lessons progress so dress and be mentally prepared for some serious exercise. This dance is tremendous fun! Partners are not necessary but always helpful. Smooth or suede leather soled, lightweight shoes will enhance your movement. Heavy shoes, inflexible shoes or shoes with rubber soles designed for most sports will be difficult to dance in. "Walk in, Swing out". (CED 261 701) Instructors: Doug & Bonnie Johnston Tuesdays, February 10 through March 17, 2009 7:00 ¿ 8:30 pm Cost: $65

Hustle and Samba Excitement, energy, and emotion take over when you experience the thrill of dancing hustle and samba. In this class you will learn the basics of both, with enough proficiency to be able to identify the music, dance at least the basic steps and at least four additional combinations in each dance. Hustle is the dance to do when your foot starts tapping in time with the music and rock `n roll just doesn¿t fit. Samba is rhythmic, dynamic, sensual, and one of the most pleasing dances to watch while you feel like you are one with the music moving around the room. Learning the basics will set you apart and ahead of the majority of dancers and tremendously increase your chances of having fun on the dance floor. Beginning dancers are welcomed in this class but will be challenged. Anticipate a lot of movement and a lot of fun. Footwork, form, moving in time with the music plus leading and following will all be taught. Singles are welcomed, especially men. Partners will be rotated on occasion to facilitate learning. (CED 265 701) Instructors: Doug & Bonnie Johnston Wednesdays, March 25 through April 29, 2009 7:00 ¿ 8:30 pm Cost: $65

Hooping is the latest fun fitness trend that is sweeping the nation. The activity of "hooping" involves hula hooping with large customized hoops that are designed to grip your body. Since these hoops are more sturdy and larger than the common hula hoop found in a store, which is generally light weight and child size, they are much easier to get the hang of, and gain a new level of control. Men, women, and children of any age, shape or size will find they can keep it going and have a blast! Hooping is a low impact cardio workout. The benefits include: building core strength, toning the body, increasing flexibility, and improving muscle memory.

This is the first time since dancing has been offered as a workshop at JCC that participants will have the opportunity to learn so much about this classic dance. The basic step, (which is easy to do), will be taught but the focus of the instruction will be on going beyond the basic level into the intermediate range. Beginners will be welcome and will benefit from this workshop but will be challenged unless they find the time to practice between classes. This is a dance of passion and flair with partners engaged in a virtual contest for each others' affection. With ballroom and social dancing as popular as it is everywhere and getting more popular all the time tango is a dance you cannot help but admire and yearn to be a part of. Here's the opportunity. Singles are always welcome.
