Hours: 4 An introduction to patient care skills and ethics used in the practice of sonography is included. Students will demonstrate skills in evaluating, protecting and providing physical care of the patient while in the Sonography Department. Completion of a unit in venipuncture and pharmacology is included. Due to specific program needs, this course may be required as a prerequisite to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Hours: 6 Provides a study of diagnostic foundations of clinical medicine pertinent to sonography to include obtaining the clinical history, interpretation of clinical laboratory test, the pathologic basis for disease, related clinical signs and symptoms, sectional anatomy, and normal/abnormal sonographic patterns. A laboratory component is included for the practice and application of normal sonographic patterns, basic scanning techniques, and protocol. Hours: 6 Consists of lectures and related laboratory exercises covering the areas of ultrasonic propagation principles, transducer parameters, interactive properties of ultrasound with human tissue, possible biologic effects, basic equipment types, instrumentation and quality control procedures. Hours: 6 Observation of all clinical duties performed in the ultrasound department. Basic instruction and scanning experience in abdominal/OB, GYN sonography concurrent with Ultrasound Imaging for Abdomen or Ultrasound Imaging for OB/GYN. Basic competencies will be performed. Hours: 5 A study of the clinical applications within the sonographic specialties of obstetrics and gynecology is covered. Topics of discussion include related clinical symptoms and laboratory tests, and normal/abnormal sonographic patterns. Basic scanning techniques and protocol are included. Hours: 3 The fundamentals of superficial parts, non-cardiac chest, prostate, extremities, brain, and spinal cord sonography, echocardiography, neonatal neurosonography, and vascular Doppler procedures are covered. Student must attend an educational seminar with a written report, write a research paper, present interesting cases, and prepare a resume. Guest speakers, as available will do presentations on these topics. Excess time will be used to view previously learned material. Hours: 3 Includes a basic study of vascular technology (Carotid Duplex Scanning and Peripheral Vascular Scanning.). Anatomy, physics, hemodynamics, exam protocols, and pathology discussed and analyzed. Designed for sonographers to progress or refresh in vascular scanning. Components: Lecture Lecture: 3 credits (45 contact hours). Prerequisites: Applicants must be RDMS credentialed or graduate of an accredited sonography program. Campus: BGT
