Examines the literature of American writers of African heritage, from the earliest slave narratives to contemporary writers. The course focuses on the major shifts in social and political movements and the effects on the literature of such writers as Lucy A. Delaney, Charles Johnson, Frederick Douglass, and Toni Morrison.

A study of major works of Western and Eastern civilizations, ancient and modern, including the literature of Asia, Africa Europe, and North and South America. Readings typically include early myths, the Bible and other sacred texts, and works by Homer, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Rousseau, Dostoyevsky, and Sartre.

Studies of the religious writings of ancient Israel and early Christianity with reference to various literary genres conventions, and stylistic concerns. This is a course with a folklore content emphasizing the social and literary relevance of myths and legends especially in the context of the heroic traditions in literature. This course is a study of 20th-century American literature which exhibits characteristics of the blues. Students are required to study the blues as African American history and culture; to read and analyze poems, short stories, autobiographies, and novels; and to write a major paper analyzing the influence of the blues on a chosen literary work.
