COLT 1812Q: Rumi and Medieval Literatures of the Middle East
1.00 Credits
Brown University
Readings in medieval literary works from the Islamic world will trace Sufism as a fundamental theme across various genres: epic romance, picaresque narrative, philosophical treatise, poetry and history. The course begins with the writings of the peripatetic philosophers like Avicenna, their rejection by Ghazali, and the definitive articulation of Sufism by Ibn Arabi, leading to Islamic mysticism's most famous poet, Rumi. We will further consider how emphatically profane works of certain genres like romance were assimilated to Sufism while others like picaresque were not. DVPS

COLT 1812R: The Baroque Mediterranean
1.00 Credits
Brown University
Investigates the absense of the South-Eastern Mediterranean as a geocultural space from classic and contemporary theorizations of the (neo)baroque and will experiment with formulating a theory of the Mediterranean baroque. The main issue in focus will be the cultures produced by the intermittent and overlapping French and Italian rule over Greek, Turkish, and Arabic-speaking territories in the later Renaissance and early modern periods and the modernization of that rule in the 19th and 20th centuries. The course is designed as an inquiry and will be based on the students' joint contributions and insights. Open to concentrators in Comparative Literature, French, Hispanic Studies, History of Art and Architecture, Italian, Literary Arts, Medieval Studies, Middle East Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies.
