This course is designed to assist students in (1) investigating the theoretical questions generated through a systematic study of black manhood; (2) applying these theoretical insights and tools to a range of political, cultural, and economic issues; and (3) exploring the multiple meanings that black men in America attach to work, family, and community. May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Development of black professional artists, artists of Harlem Renaissance, black cultural nationalist art, modernism and African American artists, social protest, and street murals are among topics covered. 2H

This course explores the representation of African Americans in contemporary American cinema since the 1970s. It also examines the contributions of African Americans on both sides of the camera, as well as various themes conveyed in the films of the period. Prerequisites: AAS 150 Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken one time excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Prereq: AAS 150. Examines the history and current status of independent black filmmaking. Independents have often served as a counterbalance to Hollywood's limited portrayal of African Americans. The impact, relevance, and aesthetics of films from the black voice will be studied. May be retaken one time excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Recordings and guest musician/lecturers used as integral part of course. Examines big-band era, urban blues, bebop, rhythm and blues, hard bop, black classical composers, contemporary popular, and avant-garde musics.

Engages students in discovering and developing critical analytical skills within the context of hip-hop history, culture, and politics. Hip-hop culture as a manifestation of Africana visual, performance, and oral tradition is studied. Africana cultural practices that have given rise to the numerous manifestations of hip-hop in the United States and abroad are explored and how hip-hop has affected/infected all facets of popular culture from the classroom to the corporate boardroom is discussed. The development, contradictions and various representations of hip-hop culture are examined. Prereq: 8 HRS OF SOCIAL SCIENCE. Examines the American political system from the perspective of black political behavior and the relationship of blacks to the political system at national, state, and local levels. Includes analyses of the civil-rights movement as well as sociopolitical movements associated with ideologies of black nationalism and black liberation.

Prereq: ONE COURSE IN SOCIAL SCIENCE. Comparative analyses of different approaches to civil and human rights in selected developed and developing countries. Review of theory of justice and political consequences in chosen countries.
