Examines two ways of knowing–science and religion–as exemplified in controversy on evolution and creationism. Claims and evidence for evolution and special creation, issues and strategies of conflict, arenas of confrontation, and implications of outcomes for both science and theology are discussed. Integrates the disciplines of science, history, and philosophy by employing a biographical consideration of selected individuals. Uses the individual as a focal point to attain a sense of scientific discovery and considers the impact of the period’s beliefs and thoughts on the development of the individual and, in turn, the individual’s impact on both the disciplines and society as a whole. Introduction to the study of dynamic systems focusing on the major classes of dynamic systems, modeling of the systems, and application of these concepts to real-world situations. Provides answers to such questions as: Why can we perfectly predict the activity of a pendulum, yet cannot accurately predict the weather? Is the similarity of physiological homeostasis and household thermostats superficial or fundamental? What are fractional dimensions, and why do they describe the world better than the geometry you learned in high school? Examines role of information systems in impacting self, work, and society with emphasis upon a wide range of positive and negative assessments of how computer systems impact us. Examines nature of conflict from systems point of view. Presents theories and techniques of negotiation as method of resolving or managing conflict. Examples of successful and unsuccessful negotiations studied. Examples drawn from many areas of conflict, including purchasing and selling, marriage dissolution, labor contracts, hostage negotiations, plea bargaining, and international peace and arms limitation talks. Differences and similarities at various levels of negotiation are noted. Concludes with mock negotiation.
