Also explores the forms and functions of the visual arts, while examining the social and historical contexts that have contributed to their development and significance. Major themes and regional variations of Islamic art are covered. May be retaken one time excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Students engage in field experiences such as working in museums, collaborative public art projects and providing art historical instruction in institutional settings such as schools, hospitals, or nonprofit organizations. Students are introduced to a range of issues faced by art historians who choose to work in the public realm. May be repeated for a maximum of 14 hours.
