Students will learn to recognize movements, rhythms, songs, instruments, and paraphernalia by country and selected ethnic groups through a practical and theoretical approach. Course will explore intermediate African dance movements coming from ceremonial dances, focusing on facial expressions, meaning, and execution of movement. Four (4) different dance types from four (4) different ethnic groups will be learned. From the dance spectacles of kings and queens, to the elegant beauty of Swan Lake; from the early feminist work of Isadora Duncan, to postmodern site-specific works like Walking on Walls; this course considers how dance performance has influenced and been influenced by its social and cultural environment.
