A survey of the social, musical, and commercial history of "country and western" music and its antecedent and related genres in the U.S. and as a global style, focusing on the history of recording technology, popular imaginings of rusticity, race, class, and gender in country music, and the lived experience of country music's listeners and creators in various eras and locales.
