ORG 8990: Research Seminar I & II:Dissertation Research Development

Two semester progressive seminar sequence focused on review and critique of selected literature for development of specific research ideas for subsequent dissertation research. Students also review the theoretical and conceptual antecedents required for the formation of effective research questions or workable hypotheses, as well as begin to formulate a general research design and approach for exploring the research questions or hypotheses. Students are encouraged to select a research seminar section based on compatibility of their research interests with that of the faculty instructor. Students commonly stay within one seminar group as they pursue their dissertation research, unless there is a need for change due to a shift in their research topic and/or design. Prerequisite: 2nd year status in SF MAOP or Doctoral Program, 3rd year status in San Diego programs and approval of faculty instructor.

(Units vary by campus) Students register for this seminar after successfully passing the qualifying/comprehensive examination. This specific seminar is focused on development of students' dissertation proposal. Students work closely with their faculty advisor to critically examine a specific literature, formulate research questions or hypotheses, and design a research methodology for examining the research question and testing the hypothesis, including data collection and data analysis methods to be used. Commonly, the student's faculty advisor becomes the Chairperson of their dissertation committee. At some point during this seminar, students will form their dissertation committee with the guidance of their faculty advisor. This course requirement is completed with students' successful defense of their dissertation proposal signifying faculty approval to conduct the research. Prerequisites: ORG 8990; SF students must pass the comprehensive/qualifying exam.

Once students successfully defend their dissertation proposal and gain approval from their dissertation committee to conduct the research, they register for this specific research seminar. During this research seminar, students' conduct, write-up, and finalize dissertation research. This required course is completed when students successful defend their dissertation and obtain the approval of their dissertation committee.

This course is required for students who have not passed their comprehensive/qualifying examination and therefore are not permitted to register for ORG 8991, or students who have failed to complete their dissertation proposal in a timely manner and who have already exhausted the allotted course units for ORG 8991. Students enrolled in this sequence continue in their selected research seminars and with their ongoing work of developing their dissertation proposal under faculty guidance while enrolled in these units. However, these course units do not apply toward the total number of units required for doctoral students.
