Students will need to learn various parts of a term including prefixes, roots, suffixes and combining forms as used in the study of the human body.

Emphasis is placed on literature review and steps in developing a research proposal for a pilot study. Ethical dimensions of health related research are examined.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: None This intensive course provides the core skill sets necessary for the practice of mediation. Students are guided through Moore's stages of mediation and how these stages apply to actual case studies of mediation. Students are offered an overview of the nature of conflict and differing styles of human interaction and are asked to explore their unique style of engaging or avoiding conflict and how this might affect their role as a mediator. The course presents an overview of theories of conflict and power, influences of gender and culture and how each helps inform a mediator's interventions. The important skill set of negotiation, including how to apply negotiation techniques, the critical issue of timing, and caucuses and other techniques to deal with impasses in the mediation are presented. The program covers the standards and ethics of this growing profession. Students learn core people skills such as reflective listening, impartiality, reframing, effective communication, and the handling of critical moments.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: IADR600 Workplace mediation is an emerging specialty within the field of mediation. The high costs of workplace conflict are driving companies and regulatory agencies such as the EEOC to use mediation and other conflict resolution practices in the workplace. Building on theory and skills introduced in IADR600 (CORE Mediation) this course begins with an overview of workplace conflict and the costs involved for companies, application of mediation practice to the workplace environment, strategies to handle difficult workplace behavior, and a summary of informal and formal arbitration practices. The course covers the process of planning workplace mediation within profit, non profit, and governmental workplace settings. The course specifically addresses unique workplace mediation issues including civil rights, sexual harassment, and disability disputes. Special issues such as power and emotions along with cross-cultural and multi-party cases are covered. The course concludes with a presentation of emerging concepts of appreciative inquiry and its application to workplace disputes.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: IADR600 The IADR Arbitration course is a collaborative class which covers the history of arbitration, its relationship in law, and common applications. The course will present topics such as arbitration statutes, awards, staying proceedings, costs, and fees. Issues of jurisdiction, arbitrator qualifications and duties, contract analysis, rules of evidence, admissibility, and relevance will be discussed in readings and online discussions with other students and the instructor. The second half of the class will cover the actual pre-hearing procedures, the hearing itself (including discussion of both procedure and dealing with substantive issues), the award (including issues of determination on the issue and potential remedies available, and the practical matter of writing the award), and grounds for challenging the award (including the concepts of appeal and judicial review). The class methodology will rely on case study evaluations to highlight weekly topics including a written decision on a chosen case. Students wishing graduate credit will submit a 10-12 page paper analysis of a case pulling together the readings and discussions of the eight weeks.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: IADR600 Health and elder care mediation is an emerging specialty in the field of mediation and conflict resolution. Building on theory and skills introduced in IADR 600 (CORE Mediation) this on-line course begins with an overview of mediation practice and dispute resolution in the healthcare and eldercare fields, ways the healthcare system generates conflict, and the emerging models of healthcare mediation. This course provides the essential theory, knowledge, skills, and values for mediators who wish to practice in settings that involve resolving a wide variety of conflicts early and directly while preserving professional relationships in healthcare settings. Students will identify the most common healthcare disputes, steps of the facilitative mediation process and how it applies to healthcare and eldercare settings, the emerging field of bioethics mediation, and essential communication skills for conflict resolution. The course covers analysis of a conflict and special issues such as end of life issues, medical errors and use of apology, and cultural issues in healthcare conflict. The course discusses interdisciplinary collaboration with physicians, nurses, administrators, attorneys and others involved in healthcare disputes. Ethical dilemmas and standards of practice in healthcare and eldercare mediation are highlighted.

This course begins with an overview of common construction disputes and the costs involved for companies and consumers. An overview of common real estate disputes and outcomes is also discussed. Students are offered an overview of the nature of conflict and differing styles of human interaction and are asked to explore their unique style of engaging or avoiding conflict and how this might affect their role as a mediator. The course presents an overview of theories of conflict and power, influences of gender and culture and how each helps inform a mediator's interventions. The important skill set of negotiation, including how to apply negotiation techniques, the critical issue of timing, and caucuses and other techniques to deal with impasses in the mediation are presented. The program covers the standards and ethics of this growing profession. Students learn core people skills such as reflective listening, impartiality, reframing, effective communication, and the handling of critical moments. The course covers the emerging concept of DART (Dispute Resolution Avoidance and Resolution Techniques) which are being used across the continent to manage conflict and resolve disputes. The process of construction mediation is discussed within the stage theory model including prevention and the model of partnering, negotiation, use of neutrals, non-binding and binding dispute resolution and litigation alternatives. Students will learn to develop conflict management plans and apply these techniques to case studies.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: IADR600 This course begins by presenting an overview of family mediation and dispute resolution and the more specific field of divorce and child custody mediation. This course combines expert lectures with coached skill building through exercises and role plays. This course includes informational lectures specific to the knowledge necessary to practice divorce and child custody mediation including family dynamics, children in divorce, mediating parenting plans, working with children in mediation, divorce mediation and the law, assets and property division and special issues such as domestic violence, drug abuse, cultural concerns, and extended family rights. This theory and practice-based intensive focuses on the presentation and analysis of mediation cases by employing role playing sessions to cover specific mediation skill sets. Each role play provides a unique scenario with common impasses encountered in mediation.

    Credits: 4 Prerequisite: IADR600 and one elective IADR6xx Mediators must not only understand the substantive processes of their work, but the theories that inform their interventions and approaches to each unique case. This course covers reflective practice as a means to develop from student to artistry. This includes the process of creating formulas based on theoretical perspectives and a thorough conflict analysis of each case. The practice of mediation is ultimately focused on the interactions between the disputants and between the disputants and the mediator. The course covers more advanced skill sets of reflective listening and assertion communication as well as key elements and interventions of the interactive processes in mediation. Students learn more advanced skill sets to deal with difficult clients. The course concludes with three weeks devoted to the application of case management strategies to mediation cases.
