    This course will expand on cultural knowledge that is currently integrated into UNE coursework through a health immersion experience to Ghana, West Africa. Content will include a focus on health issues related to persons who live in developing countries, specifically the communities of Sekondi and Takoradi, Ghana. Students will have the ability to participate in activities appropriate to their discipline that includes: 1) Participation in the delivery of direct patient care; 2) Community health education with the assistance of community health workers; 3) Becoming versed in the use of interpreters. Students are required to travel to Africa. Travel expenses are required. Prerequisites: Completed two successful years of study in a baccalaureate or graduate program in the college of health professions at UNE.

    A presentation of the theories of the interconnectedness of body, mind, spirit, the relationship of illness in the person and in society to this connectedness. The course reviews the varied definitions of health and past and current methods of healing illness. The course compares the current traditional western model for health and healing with non-traditional and Eastern methods currently available in the United States.

    The second semester course is concerned with roles and functions of social workers in various administrative and supervisory capacities, and how the work of the human service program is done through the efforts of its staff. Students gain an understanding of the financial management process, human resource issues, board leadership development, and task group leadership. Cross-listed with SSW 565.

    This developmental course focuses on the writing process. Enrollment in the course is determined by a placement process. Faculty work with students on generating ideas, researching, organizing their work, editing and revising. Students receive assignments and also have the opportunity to bring in writing assignments from other content courses. Credits count toward full-time enrollment, but do not satisfy core curriculum or graduation requirements. Course grades are computed into students' grade point averages. Students must achieve a passing grade in Writing Tutorial prior to enrollment in English Composition, which is required for graduation. For matriculated students only.

    This developmental level course focuses on increasing students' competency in using mathematics to solve problems while developing confidence in their mathematical ability. Topics include operations and problem solving with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and integers. This course is offered on a Pass/Fail basis only. Credits count toward full-time enrollment, but do not satisfy core curriculum or graduation requirements. Course grades are computed into students' cumulative grade point averages. Students must achieve a passing grade in Basic Math & Algebra prior to enrollment in Intro Algebra & Problem Solving. For matriculated students only.

Topics include solving algebraic equations, applying formulas, graphing, factoring, and an introduction to operations with polynomials, and exponents.     This developmental level course focuses on developing proficiency in using algebra to communicate mathematically, represent mathematical relationships, and solve applied problems. Topics include functions, exponents, solving and graphing linear and quadratic equations, operations with polynomials, rational and radical equations, inequalities, and systems of equations. Credits count toward full-time enrollment, but do not satisfy core curriculum or graduation requirements. Course grades are computed into students' cumulative grade point average. For matriculated students only.

This course provides reinforcement of basic chemistry concepts and the math involved in solving chemistry applications.     This developmental level course is designed to support developmental mathematics students preparing to take General Chemistry I, students who did not successfully complete General Chemistry I because of difficulty with the mathematics required for the course, or students whose majors do not require chemistry until their second year of studies. Credit counts toward full-time enrollment, but does not satisfy core curriculum or graduation requirements. Course grade is computed into students' cumulative grade point average.
