Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are software packages with the tools to capture, store, retrieve, analyze, and display spatial data. GIS links data representing the spatial relationship of features in the world around us ( map information) to a database containing descriptive information about those objects. It can be used to aid in decision making and planning in a wide array of application disciplines from city planning to natural resource management. This course is an introductory course that covers the basics of GIS, including database design and development, spatial analysis, and the creation of cartographic output.

Contents include: the concept of public health, its development from a historical perspective, the role and mission of public health organizations, and an overview of current public health programs, the three core functions and ten essential services, as well as the tools to assess those functions and services. In addition, students are also introduced to basic epidemiological terms and concepts and evidence-based public health processes. In addition, students will be introduced to Internet-based distance learning techniques and various Internet research databases. This course will serve as an introduction to procedures in the collection, summarization, analysis and presentation of data. The course is deliberately broad and not intended to give students an in-depth understanding of statistical methodology and modeling procedures. Rather, its intent is to provide an overview of some of the main areas of statistics and a working knowledge of basic summary statistics, graphs and simple statistical tests for hypothesis testing. At the end of the course a student should be able to evaluate simple statistical usage in everyday life and their own discipline.
