This course introduces the student to community and public health nursing as a health system. The roles and responsibilities of the nurse in population-focused services are explored. Emphasis is placed on understanding epidemiologic methods, health disparities, health care policy, disease prevention, health risk, health promotion and/or restorative health. The client may be an individual, a family system, community or population.

This course is designed to inform health care professionals regarding the laws impacting the health care system. Case studies will be used to analyze the dynamics of the health care professional duties and responsibilities as they are shaped by legal rulings. Issues addressed will include, but not be limited to, the anatomy of a medical malpractice lawsuit, advanced directives, informed consent, confidentiality, physician assisted suicide, euthanasia, reproductive rights and mental capacity. This course introduces the student to the specialty area of childbearing and childrearing families. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and science of nursing that support family-centered care focusing on health promotion, disease prevention and healing along the maternal and child health continuum. Guided simulation experiences integrate the complexities of quality, safety and technology in caring for women, children and their families. Clinical experiences include holistic care of women, children and their families in a variety of health care settings. Students work in concert with the client(s) to achieve the highest level of wellness before and during pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum, and beyond the reproductive years. Developmental theories in caring for healthy children and those with health alterations are applied.

Evidence Based Practice II focuses on current review of nursing research literature and research evaluation through an evidence-based practice approach. Emphasis is placed on developing the skills required for interpretation and utilization of research in nursing practice. This course prepares graduates to participate as members of a research/quality improvement team.

This course examines the intentional connection of concepts in Adult Health III, Community Health and Clinical Practice Experiences. This active inquiry and engagement extend the development of clinical reasoning to clinical judgment.

This course provides the student with the opportunity to identify, explore and develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a nurse manager/leader. Various leadership and management theories are discussed. Emphasis is placed on contemporary issues which include communication, organizational structures, team development, decision making, staffing, change, safety and quality improvement.
