Health Care Informatics is an online introductory course that prepares students to practice in today's fast paced health care environment. ¿Health Care Informatics¿ introduces you to the various information systems in practice, education, research, and administration. Students begin by becoming familiar with the building blocks of health care informatics such as computer hardware, software, databases and communication applications. Students also learn the basic principles of Netiquette and how to assess web sites for reliability and credibility.To develop a professional understanding of health care informatics, the student will learn about Healthcare Information Systems, Tele-health, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Summer 2010 Only This is a hybrid online class. The first meeting is a face-to-face class on May 17th (Portland campus) from 1:00 pm - 3:50 pm in Proctor Hall 103 (computer lab). The rest of the classes will be held online until July 1st, 2010.

This course provides a comprehensive approach to health assessment, the nursing process, and its relationship to the prevention and early detection of diseases in clients across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on the processes of health assessment including interviewing, history taking, and physical examination. This course includes a laboratory component that enables students to apply concepts in an experiential setting. Incorporated throughout the course is the importance of communication and collaboration across culturally diverse populations.

This course continues to examine mental health across the lifespan from a holistic caring framework. Content builds on concepts that were introduced in Adult Health I by focusing on the client¿s responses to mental health issues. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and science of nursing which includes the theories of etiology and psychopathology and the role of the nurse in the relation to psychiatric, diagnostic categories, and treatments. Simulated experiences afford guided practice in integrating knowledge, skills, and attitudes inherent in therapeutic communication in caring for the patient with mental health concerns. Clinical experiences serve to augment communication skills and therapeutic use of self.
