This course is designed to teach future educators how to implement discipline techniques that are respectful of both the student and the teacher. Children/students are empowered to use class meetings to solve problems, learn conflict resolution techniques, and establish class rules and responsibilities "jobs". The teacher strives toprovide a sense of belonging and significance for each student. Family education in this approach to discipline is also advocated. Emphasis is placed on curriculum areas that are developmentally appropriate for young children, curriculum planning that is inclusive of cultures and abilities, and is respectful of young children's total development from birth through pre-school years. Montessori Schools, Head Start, KERA preschools and private childcare field observations are included. Prerequisites: ECE 100/101 or permission of the instructor.
