EMS 100: Introduction to Emergency Medical Care

This course is the first component to the emergency medical care system. The basic training course will provide the proper training to allow the provision of basic life support to victims in emergencies, as well as, minimize discomfort and further injury. Emphasis of the course will be development of fundamental skills, management of medical and trauma emergencies, bleeding, shock, basic life support airway management, ambulance operations, communications, medical-legal and ethical aspects of emergency care. The curriculum meets the eligibility requirements of the U.S. DOT National Standard Curriculum warranted for credentials as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B).

Following the U.S. DOT National Standard Paramedic Curriculum, this course discusses the fundamentals of advanced theories of EMS practice and treatment modalities based on normal physiology of human body systems, life span development, illness prevention, and well-being. Discussions focus on legal and ethical issues, medical direction for EMS, ambulance operations with hazardous material awareness, medical incident command, rescue awareness and operations with an overview of the determination of death and preservation of evidence as required by administrative regulations of forensics and crime scene awareness. Students analyze clinical advanced life support decision making and therapeutic communication in adult medical emergencies and resuscitations. Prerequisite: EMS 100/102/190 and departmental approval.

Theories for paramedic practices and study of path physiological etiologies of disease and body system response to injury or illness as outlined in the U.S. National Standard National Paramedic Curriculum. Pre-hospital pharmacology with drug classifications, actions, indications, contraindications, dosages and routes of administration, which also will include pharmacological sources, dosage calculations and first-line, advanced cardiac life support agents will be introduced and reviewed throughout the course of the class. Emphasis will focus on the cellular and tissue environment, acid base balance, hypo perfusion, autonomic nervous system, intravenous access therapy and advanced airway management, which will include pulmonary pathophysiology, cardiology anatomy, and physiology with electrocardiogram interpretations and advanced cardiac life support outlined with cardiology treatment and modalities.
