An examination of classical syllogisms, sets, functions and relations, and modern propositional and class logic. A portion of the course is devoted to the examination of philosophical problems raised by the study of logic.

A treatment of the basic metaphysical conceptions of philosophy through an historical and systematic analysis. Special attention is paid to the apparent loss of metaphysics in the late nineteenth century and its slow recovery in the twentieth.

Introduction to the simplest forms of life: bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. Study includes structure and function of microorganisms and their role in environmental, medical, and industrial applications. Laboratory work includes introduction to media preparation and cell growth, including isolation, culture and assay of bacterial systems.

A study of the phenomenon of ideological thought and its causes, characteristic of major modern social movements.

The phenomenon of modernism, particularly in England and America, with its emphasis on formal qualities, irony, point of view. Focus on connections between Modernist poetry and Neoclassical and Victorian literature. The modern novel, its roots in satire.

Cell structure and function, including cell division, protein synthesis and trafficking, production of energy, and cell communication. Relationships to immunology and cancer are explored, along with recombinant DNA technologies. Laboratory work emphasizes the cellular components of bacterial systems, including DNA isolation, protein purification, and site-directed mutagenesis.

Basic principles of organic chemistry, including, but not limited to, the structure, nomenclature, characterization methods, and reactions of organic compounds. Emphasis on medical and biotechnological examples.
