Learning Strategies is designed to help students develop a positive approach to studying. This course builds students’ personal and academic management skills which are essential to college success. Topics include: basic computer skills, college resources and services for students, time management, textbook reading, note-taking, test-taking, library use, values clarification, cultural diversity, social management, decision making, career planning, study strategies, memory improvement and management of academic anxiety.

Basic Writing is a review of grammar and mechanics which concentrates on sentence patterns and diction, paragraph organization and development and development of the short essay. Emphasis is placed on the writing and editing process, the development of topics and ideas and the use of the computer in the writing process.

Developmental Writing emphasizes elements of the writing process such as grammar and diction, sentence control, the paragraph, the essay, the research process and paper, topic choice and idea development, and various modes of written discourse.

Introduction to Early Childhood Education is an introduction to the early childhood profession, including an emphasis on professionalism and developmentally appropriate practices. The course also includes an overview of the history of early childhood educational theoretical program models; different types of early childhood programs; community resources; professional organizations; and contemporary trends and issues in programs for children ages birth through eight.

Safe, Healthy Learning Environments is a study of the basic principles and practices of safety, health and nutrition as they relate to the early childhood setting, home and community for children ages birth through eight. Also included is a study of principles for creating appropriate learning environments for young children. Field experience is required.

Early Childhood Curriculum is a study of developmentally appropriate practices and the teacher’s role in supporting the development of children ages birth through eight. Also included is an emphasis on curriculum planning, including goals, environment, roles of teachers and of parents, materials and settings. Field experience is required.

Infant, Toddler and Child Development is study of the physical, cognitive, social and emotional aspects of young children and their application to the care, guidance and development of children ages birth through eight. Laboratory observation and interaction are required.

Infant and Toddler Care is a course in the care and education of infants and toddlers (birth to age three) in a group setting, such as childcare centers, family childcare homes and Early Head Start. The course includes rationales and strategies for supporting the whole child, including cognitive, language, social, emotional and physical development in a safe and responsive environment. Emphasis is on relationship-based care and education with special attention to the unique environmental aspects of programs for children under age three.
