This is a basic course in the growth, development, and learning of young children, prebirth through age eight, which will provide students with the foundation for becoming competent early childhood professionals with a knowledge of how young children grow, develop, and learn. Major theories of child development will be integrated with all aspects of development including biological, physical, social, cultural, emotional, cognitive, and language domains. The adult"s role in supporting each child"s growth, development, and learning will be emphasized. (NMCCN ECED 1113)

This course examines ways to recognize and respond to each child"s physical health, emotional well being, and nutritional and safety needs and then appropriately plan, maintain and facilitate the use of indoor and outdoor learning environments to promote each child"s physical, emotional, and nutritional well being, with consideration for the needs of students with special needs. Emotional distress, child abuse and neglect, and health screening tools will be examined. (NMCCN ECED 1122)
