Includes an overview of history of early education, theoretical program models, different types of early childhood programs, community resources, professional organizations, and contemporary trends and issues in programs for children ages birth to eight. Topics include rationales and strategies for supporting the whole child including cognitive, language, social-emotional, and physical development in a safe, responsive environment. Emphasizes relation-based care and education with special attention to the unique environmental aspects of programs for the child under three.
