Educating Exceptional Children and Youth is a survey course for all pre-service teachers. This course is designed to help them understand who the exceptional children and youth are and the laws and regulations which govern how they are to be served. Topics such as inclusion, diversity, assistive technology, collaboration, multidisciplinary teams, and the impact of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are addressed. In addition, strategies for working with exceptional children and youth in the regular classroom are discussed.

This course is designed to provide the undergraduate student an overview of the various disability categories, identify signs, symptoms, and characteristics, and give strategies for teaching children with exceptionalities. This course also includes and overview of resources, placement, Laws (Discipline), Parents Rights and responsibilities, and state and federal regulations.

This course deals the psychological nature and needs of emotionally handicapped children.

This course will focus on behavioral, ecological, and developmental learning theories and implications for instructions specific to students with severe or profound disabilities. Methods of defining current level of functioning, designing interventions, and monitoring learner progress will also be studied. This course will provide students with the skills and understanding needed to teach severely/profoundly disabled students. Program needs, services, and an overview of the role of persons with severe or profound disabilities within our society will be covered. Field-based experience are required.

Areas covered include topics of definition, prevalence, causes, characteristics, classification, intervention, identification, assesment, special educational adapatations, and family issues. Emphasis on adaptive behavior and the concomitant roles of teaching and inclusion in the education of persons with retradation across various ages and ability levels. Field based expereince are required.
