    Students gain a working knowledge of formal and informal argumentation through lectures, readings, and exercises in categorical and hypothetical logic, as well as the fallacies and structures of informal reasoning. They gain experience in practical argumentation through weekly presentations of short argumentative compositions (criticized publicly) as well as argumentative ex tempore responses to assigned topics. The term requires a classically-structured and argumentative composition.

    Again students deepen their understanding of the structure and parts of a classical composition through lecture, readings, and compositions publicly presented and criticized. E mphasis is placed on the latter canons of rhetoric: Style, Memory, and D elivery. Students present original compositions, thematic ex tempore speeches, and the work of others, and they prepare a longer, classically- structured, stylistic, and argumentative composition.
  • 0.25 Credits

    One term. Second-through fourth year courses. The weekly D eclamations give sophomore, junior and senior students a venue each academic term to practice and sharpen various presentation and performance skills in rhetoric, public speaking, writing, debate and argumentation. Instructors and topics vary by class and term. Graded pass-fail only.
