  • 4.00 Credits

Students serve an internship to practically apply their skills in real-world employment situations. All internships are project-oriented and directly related to their area of study. Each internship is served under the sponsorship of a faculty advisor, and students are required to document the results of their experience.
  • 4.00 Credits

This course introduces concept-based design using visual acuities for organizing information. Students explore various aspects of graphic communication and production for print media and apply design principles and concepts relating to typography, page layout, and general graphic design techniques to solving visual communications problems. For this class, students are required to present a portfolio of 2-5 exemplary works. ( Prerequisite: ART 203, ART 235)
  • 4.00 Credits

This class introduces the principles of graphic form and structure, concept development and visual organization. Students refine their computer skills using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and other industry standard design software. Students are introduced to the mechanical aspects of graphic design including folds, ink and paper selection, and CMYK/spot color printing processes. For this class, students are required to present a portfolio of 3-5 exemplary works. ( Prerequisites: ART 203, ART 209, ART 235, ART 237)
  • 4.00 Credits

Students are introduced to the history of the printed work: type development, design and treatment. Theories of text hierarchies, legibility, and type family characteristics are demonstrated and explored.
  • 4.00 Credits

Students create the individual elements of multimedia projects including computer animations, sound files, vides clips, graphics, and design interfaces. The history of interactive design is studied. Students examine non-digital interactive systems such as games, puzzles, and toys and a basis for understanding psychological and social issues which form the basis of contemporary interactive design. In studio practice, students combine sound, text, and images into interactive animations. ( Prerequisite: ART 203)
  • 4.00 Credits

Students are introduced to basic typographic principles such as typographic hierarchy, families, history, and the use of columnar grid. A variety of applied design problems focus on design for print production. Students are required to present a portfolio of 3-5 exemplary works.
  • 4.00 Credits

A continuation of Media Arts I exploring advanced concepts in interactivity. Students study current trends in the design of CD-ROM and interactive computer games. Various types of sound and motion are analyzed as tools for effective communication. In the studio, emphasis is placed on advanced techniques for interactivity including menu-driven systems and simulations, and on adding video to interactive designs. ( Prerequisite: ART 271)
  • 4.00 Credits

Students apply their knowledge of typography towards creative projects designed to explore systems of text-based visual communication. Styling type for content is emphasized, as are both contemporary and historical typographic design trends and preparation of files for pre-press production. For this class, students are required to present a portfolio of 2-5 exemplary works. ( Prerequisite: ART 270)
  • 4.00 Credits

This is a Graphic Design Capstone Class in which students integrate illustration, imaging, and layout to produce a cohesive multi-page document. This class focuses on the process of publication design from conception through design and production. Topics include typography, layout, application of design theory, production (paper selection, ink selection, file preparation, and writing job specifications), and an introduction to copyright issues and legal and ethical aspects of the design profession. Software for illustration, imaging, and layout techniques are used with a focus on the production of multi-page documents. Students are required to present a portfolio of 2-5 exemplary works. ( Prerequisite: ART 261)
  • 4.00 Credits

This course introduces design principles for screen layouts, interactive interfaces for Web sites, and demonstrates the information gathering capabilities necessary for e-commerce. Students examine Web site user interface and cross-platform screen design strategies, and demonstrates how to use CGI scripts and pre-driven Java Scripts for information management and interactivity.
