Focuses on three major movements within the chicana/o community; labor, nationalism, and feminism. Students assess these three movements to determine what role they have played in transforming the social conditions and political identity of the Chicana/o Latina/o population in the US. Cross listed with WMST/CHST 3800. Prerequisite: CHST 1100, SOC 1000 or WMST 1080.

Introduces materials and methods of folklife research, concentrating on the nonverbal expressions of traditional culture in America. Topics include material culture, belief systems, and traditional events and celebrations. Prerequisites: any two of the following: ENGL 2310, 2320; HIST 1210, 1220; AMST 2010, ENGL 2400 or consent of instructor. (Offered once each year)

Explores the historic preservation and sustainability movements and contemporary practices in these inter-related fields. Through reading, lectures, discussions and site visits, students will study how the historic preservation and the building industry professions can address advanced issues in sustainability related to the environment, culture and economics. Dual listed with AMST 5040. Cross listed with ARE 4040. Prerequisites: 6 hours in AMST or ARE.

Analyzes environmentalism as a political phenomenon. Provides students with a basic understanding of how to analyze political issues by: (1) examining the historical and contemporary issues that produce controversy over environmental matters; and (2) surveying the impacts of these issues on the formulation and implementation of laws, policies, and regulations. Cross listed with POLS/ENR/GEOG/REWM 4051. Prerequisite: POLS 1000.

This course explores how lived experiences, sociocultural relations, and connections to place shape the constructs of individual and collective identities. Students will develop a conscious awareness of place by critically engaging with the Manito diaspora, Indigenous ways of knowing, Anglo-Texan working-class culture, Mexican-American borderlands, and Black rural and urban experience. Prerequisite: junior standing.

This course supplements the Museum Studies minor's academic training with experiential learning in a collaborative context. The internship provides students with an opportunity to apply skills learned in a variety of disciplines to a work setting, while advancing the work of the sponsoring museum or related organization. Prerequisites: AMST/ANTH/ART/HIST 2700 and AMST/ANTH/ART/HIST 2705. Restricted to Museum Studies minors.

Examines the florescence of African American creativity, centered in Harlem, New York, between the end of World War I and the onset of the Great Depression. This movement had a tremendous impact on African American culture in and outside of the U.S., including Africa and the Caribbean. Cross listed with AAST 4250. Dual listed with AMST 5250. Prerequisites: CH and WB: graduate standing.
