Theory and practice of mechanical procedures involved in production of a small newspaper by offset lithographic process; includes automated typesetting, cold lay out construction, paste-up techniques, lithographic camera operations, stripping, plate making and presswork. . Advanced study of electronic publishing and laser printing systems. Instruction on the Compugraphic Integrator 12, CG 8400 and EP 400 (Hewlett Packard) laser printer. Emphasis is placed on composition and storage on hard and floppy disks. Typesetting functions such as the use of pre programmable user defined keys, tabbing and typographic refinements. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. 2 lecture and 2 lab hours per week. 3 credit hours.

This course is designed to teach the student advanced instruction and practice in stripping film utilizing electronic stripping software. Course work includes creating electronic impositions, templates, and postscript files. Advanced preparation of folding dummies, color proofing, platemaking, and master marks; handling and use of electronic image setters, film processors, color printers, rapid access materials and chemistry. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. 2 lecture and 2 lab hours per week. 3 credit hours.

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the hardware equipment and software application used in the printing industry for electronic color publishing, image setting, and color separation applications. Emphasis is placed on the study and hands on operation of color separations on film, paper and plates; color scanning techniques are utilized by electronic processing and image setting. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. 2 lecture and 2 lab hours per week. 3 credit hours.

Emphasis is placed on the study of the latest version of Quark XPress software application with hands on operation of personal computer systems, flat bed scanners, laser printers, image setters, color printers and proofers used in the electronic pre press and digital imaging area of graphic communications. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. 2 lecture and 2 lab hours per week. 3 credit hours.
