This course exposes students to the expanding role of sports in society and the contemporary fields of sports management and athletic administration. The content includes a broad-based examination of the foundations of theory, techniques, culture and practices of management, as applied to all segments of the community.

This course provides the student with a foundation of economic thinking targeted at the sport industry. Topics include sport industry delivery, economic impact of sport, competition, market structures, and the future direction of the sport industry. Prerequisite: BU 106.

A study of the nature and sources of law; the principles of law dealing with business and everyday life. Topics include an overview of the American legal system, business torts, product liability, contract law, consumer protection, intellectual property and cyber-law.

This course explores the emerging legalities of the dynamic sports landscape, highlighting the blurring line between amateur and professional athletics. The course content focuses on legal foundations, supported by actual case citations and myriad case studies, examining how litigation and legislation continue to shape the ever-changing sports industry, as well as society. Prerequisite: BU 106.

This course traces the roots and development of recreation and sport from the Sumerian culture to modern time. A history of individual sports, governing bodies and both the ancient and modern Olympics will be studied. The course will also analyze the political, social and economic influences of the era that influenced sports and their development. Prerequisite: BU 106.

This course provides students with an ethical foundation and a moral compass when facing critical issues in the world of sports. Topics include sportsmanship, violence in sport, performance enhancing drugs, justice and sports management, ethics of coaching, betting and gambling in sports, and race and gender in sports. Prerequisite: BU 106.

This course provides students fundamental knowledge and skills in designing and managing sport and recreational facilities and organizing sport events. This course includes facility requirements and enhancements for both indoor and outdoor areas, planning for events from routine athletic schedules to special events and tournaments, scheduling of facilities and events, and equipment management. Attention is given to the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, as well as maintenance of both facilities and equipment. Woven throughout the course are issues of liability and risk management. Field trips and a practicum are required. Prerequisite: BU 106.

This course will focus on international marketing, import/ export strategies, manufacturing and shipping of goods, and the globalization of sport. The course will also provide some understanding of the culture and sport of a specific country to which the student will travel. Lectures by faculty of a host university, as well as local sport leaders, will supplement the course work performed before and after the trip.

This course will provide the student with a technical background in the areas of fundraising and grant writing. The course will focus on working within the structure of a notfor- profit organization, dealing with government agencies, structuring fundraising plans, and preparing a proposal package for foundation funding. Prerequisite: BU 236, AC 203, EC 204.
