PSCI 1019: Strategy of War
3.00 Credits
Middlebury College
How do adversaries decide to behave when facing an opponent What techniques do they use, and do they gain an advantage over their enemy In considering these questions, important concepts including bargaining, bluffing, and learning behaviors will be considered to understand adversarial interaction. A simulation accompanies each concept, whether as simple as competitive card games or as formal as computer demonstrations. Our goal is to engage students in the dynamics of these strategies, apply them to cases of international and civil conflict, where they are riskiest and most dire, and to consider other applications of these dynamics beyond international conflict. PSCI 1022: The Political Theories of Machiavelli and Kant:Realism and Idealism
3.00 Credits
Middlebury College
In this course we will read closely two thinkers who have influenced all of modern political thought: Machiavelli and Kant. We will read Machiavelli's Prince, and large portions of his Discourses on Livy, to better understand his prescriptions for effective politics. And we will read Kant' s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals , along with sections from hi s Critique of Judgment , to understand what has been called "Kant's political philosophy," especially his understanding of how human beings could judge right from wrong. We will also read some of Hannah Arendt's lectures on Kant. Our main goal will be to learn how to think about power, ethics, and political life through the texts of these two profound thin kers.
