BIOL 1001: Medical Botany
3.00 Credits
Middlebury College
The historical basis of medical therapeutics is botany. Much of the world's population today is still dependent upon plants as a source of medicine. In this course we will aim to understand the importance of botanical diversity and how plants affect human culture and health. To do so, we will focus on plant families and the bioactivity of plants as related to disease. An experiential component of plant pharmacy and the making of plant medicines will enable students to connect their knowledge of plant constituents to a practical and functional understanding of medical botany. (J. Mitchell, a visiting winter term instructor) Julie Mitchell is a professional member of the American Herbalist Guild with an active herbal medicine practice in Addison County, Vermont. She is a candidate for a 2008 Master of Science degree in Herbal Medicine and holds a BSc degree in Herbal Medicine, both awarded from the University of Wales, UK.

BIOL 1002: Topics in the Ecology,Diversity, and Conservation of Bees
3.00 Credits
Middlebury College
Bees are critically important as pollinators in agricultural and natural systems, and many species now face a variety of threats. One obstacle to conservation of these animals is a lack of taxonomic expertise and knowledge of bee biology. In this course students will learn to identify some of Vermont's 250+ species of bees, and will discuss a range of topics including reproductive ecology, pollen specialization, foraging behavior, pollination mutualisms, tritrophic interactions, conservation and management of bees in agro-ecosystems, and comparison of social and solitary life histories. (BIOL 0140) SCI (L. Richardson, a visiting winter term instructor)
