This course will use a multi-disciplinary lens to analyze American racial attitudes and beliefs over time. The course will emphasize the historical roots of American racism, and how the racial perceptions of various types of Americans have evolved as material circumstances and ideological traditions changed. Both progressive and regressive racial attitudes will be addressed through readings, lectures, discussion, and guest speakers. Students will explore how racial attitudes have interacted with such different areas of life as culture, politics, work, gender relations, violence, religion and ethnicity to shape profoundly twenty-first century America. This study will examine World War I and the Peace of Versailles, the Bolshevik Revolution and Civil War in Russia, the crisis of the western democracies, totalitarian movements such as Fascism and Nazism, the impact of World War II, the Cold War, postwar reconstruction and economic revival, European socialism and the emergence of a European Community, Eastern European transformation in 1990's, and cultural and social trends, all of which shape a modern European perspective.
