This course is a hands on workshop for traditional building skills of architectural blacksmithing. The course includes the philosophy of historic ironwork and the reproduction of forged hardware such as hinges, latches, hooks, and various tools. The participants will learn the use of a coal forge, and a gas forge, forging processes, tool heat treating and weld forging. The course will be taught by blacksmith craftsman.

This course covers many aspects of millwork such as: use of hand planes, sharpening a plane iron,, and tuning a hand plane; replicating and producing moldings; coping and mitering of base and crown moldings; using historic wooden molding planes; using liquid wood and epoxies; producing cove moldings on the table saw; sharpening and burnishing a cabinet scraper; and other tricks of the trade.

Preservation and restoration work in England/ Wales/ Scotland and other places will give students actual experience working on centuries-old buildings while experiencing the culture of that country. Each year TBSI will schedule trips with a duration of one or two or three weeks with an emphasis in stone/ masonry or stain glass/ faux/ tile painting or woodworking/ millwork/ carving/ building techniques or etc. related to preservation and restoration. The participants will learn history, experience the culture and do hands-on work in the particular area of travel.
