TBSI 2646: Traditional Millwork/ Woodwork Preservation

This course is a hands-on workshop for the traditional building skills of millwork/ woodwork. The course includes the philosophy of historic preservation and traditional practices for the repair and replicating of historic moldings and millwork. This course covers many aspects of millwork such as: use of hand planes, sharpening a plane iron, and tuning a hand plane, replicating and producing moldings, coping and mitering base and crown moldings, using historic wooden molding planes, using liquid wood and epoxies, producing cove moldings on the table saw, sharpening and burnishing a cabinet scraper, and other tricks of the trade.

Each year TBSI will schedule trips with a duration of one or two or three weeks with an emphasis in stone/masonry or stain glass/ faux/ tile painting or woodworking/ millwork/ carving/ building techniques or etc. related to preservation and restoration. The participants will learn history, experience the culture and do hands-on work in the particular area of travel.
