This course is a hands-on workshop for the traditional skills of architectural wood carving. The course includes the philosophy of historic wood carving and traditional practices of wood carving. The participants learn carving principles through working on an Acanthus Leaf or similar models. The workshop also covers layout and design and the use and sharpening of carving chisels. This course is a hands-on workshop for the traditional building skill of wood window fabrication, repair, and restoration. The course content includes the philosophy and history of wood windows, and restoration and preservation techniques. Traditional practices in fabrication of a wood window are also taught. This course offers a hands on workshop for the traditional building skills of the ancient art of making and decorating ceramic tiles. Participants will learn how to roll and cut handmade tiles from a sheet of damp clay. Participants will decorate "biscuits" or clay fired tiles, using traditional methods which have been used since the time of ancient Egyptians. Participants will also learn how to get the tiles ready for final firing by applying different glazes for different effects. This workshop will include a field trip to the Snow college ceramic art studio to observe the final stages of loading the kiln and the process of firing tiles. A brief demonstration on how to cut tiles on a wet saw and the installation of tiles will also be presented by an expert.

The course content includes faux painting techniques in marbling, wood graining, gold leafing, fresco art, antiquing, gilding, sgraffito, wall treatments, and others. This course is a hands on workshop for tradItional building skill of architectural blacksmithing. The course includes the philosophy of historic ironwork and the reproduction of forged hardware such as hinges, latches, hooks and various tools.
