Examines the theory and practice of performing-arts management - specifically, management of non-profit performing-arts organizations. Focuses primarily on issues of leadership and executive management, artistic management, financial management, audience engagement, communications, and more broadly, on advocacy for, and the general state of, the performing arts.

Explores audience development in the performing arts through the lenses of marketing and fundraising. Examines management strategies for audience engagement in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors of the music industry. Focuses on the role of the performing arts in society and the challenges and opportunities facing the creators of music.

Dramatic and musical preparation of operatic roles through the production of opera scenes or chamber opera. RESTRICTIONS: Admission by audition, with permission of private instructor. Offered fall and spring semesters. Students may sign up for 0-credit only if they have reached the 17-credit limit. Music majors and minors must be enrolled for credit in at least one departmentally approved ensemble during each semester of private study.

Participation and performance in University of Delaware Opera Theatre's fall or spring Mainstage productions. Rehearsals will include musical preparation, musical coaching and staging. Additional outside rehearsals and coachings may be required and will vary based on repertoire choices. PREREQ: Admission by audition, with permission of private instructor. RESTRICTIONS: Auditions for Mainstage productions and casting decisions for the following year are made at the very end of the Spring semester, so those interested in participating are encouraged to contact UD Opera Theatre staff as early as possible.

A performance/workshop class designed to encourage musical creativity, providing students with techniques and strategies for musical improvisation within a collaborative, supportive, and structured environment. The class will include instruction in many aspects of improvisation, using regular audio and video examples of improvisational music to expose students to the varied ways which creative musicians use improvisation. The majority of student's time, however, will be spent playing for each other to build confidence and gain knowledge through personal experience.

Preparation for teaching the fundamentals of jazz theory, jazz history, basic improvisation, and jazz ensemble rehearsal techniques.

Introductory seminar on Selected music theory topics that vary from semester to semester. Includes discussion of scholarly literature. The course may focus on individual composers, analytical approaches, pedagogy, improvisation, or other music-theoretical subjects. PREREQ: MUSC295 with a grade of C- or better.

1.00 - 3.00 Credits
Students complete a semester-long capstone project that builds on their coursework within and outside the Department of Music and helps the student better define and achieve their professional goals after graduation. The project will be determined through consultation with the instructor and will represent a culmination of the student's major/area of study. Develop a web-based presentation portfolio that showcases work accomplished throughout their degree program. While the capstone project will provide a centerpiece for this presentation portfolio, the website should include narratives and reflections that explain how the project builds on prior work and provides a foundation for future professional activities. RESTRICTIONS: Students can only take the course in their senior year, with permission of the instructor.

Review of the history of Western music (c. CE 400-Present). Designed for students who do not pass the Graduate Music History Entrance Examination. Students must pass course before taking MUSC611. RESTRICTIONS: Does not count toward credits for degree.
