Introduces students to the basic numerical techniques used in current models to predicting and/or simulating weather. Topics include: conservation equations of the atmosphere; numerical methods of solution; boundary and initial conditions; coordinate systems; parameterization schemes; and model application and evaluation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Students will learn to run the WRF model and use it as a benchmark for testing and applying the techniques learned in class. PREREQ: GEOG405, MATH243, MATH302, GEOG423.
