Department approval must be obtained prior to starting the courseWriting Basic Skills Prerequisite: ENGL 0300Reading Basic Skills Prerequisite: READ 0302Math Basic Skills Prerequisite: MATH 0302This course finishes the basic preparation for a new peace officer. It will cover laws directly related to police fieldwork. Topics include the Texas Transportation Code, intoxicated driver, Texas Penal Code, elements of crimes, Texas Family Code, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code, and civil liability. The student will be required to demonstrate and practice the skills of a police officer including patrol, driving, traffic stop, use of force, mechanics of arrest, firearm safety, and emergency medical care. Also included is the study of the techniques and procedures used by police officers on patrol; controlled substance identification; handling abnormal persons; traffic collision investigation; note taking and report writing; vehicle operation; traffic direction; crowd control; and jail operations.
