ALHL 101: Phlebotomy & Lab

A combination of lecture, lab and hands-on practical experience, this course is aimed at developing skills needed to work in an entry level position in medical facilities as a phlebotomist (blood drawing). Coursework includes selecting and preparing the skin puncture site, collecting specimens, adhering to proper health and safety guidelines, patient/technician relationship, and clerical duties associated with proper record keeping of laboratoty tests. Under supervision, students master daily tasks in venipuncture, capillary sticks, and other phlebotomy procedures. Practice will be on approved simulators. Laboratory component requires completion of at least 100 successful and 25 successful capillary sticks on humans under supervision of a certifed phlebotomist at an approved facility totaling at least 120 clock hours of clinical training. Includes information on the ASCP and NCA Register Phlebotomy Technician examination and required CEU's to maintain certification.

A non-laboratory course intended for allied health majors, including medical assistants and phlebotomists. Emphasis is placed on the types and classification of drugs, their modes of action at the cellular, systemic, and organismal level, their contraindications and possible long term effects, covers the science of drugs including their origin, nature, properties, composition, uses, and effects upon living organims, especially that make it medically effective. Focuses on the study of pharmacology and its implications for health care of individuals across the lifespan. Legal and ethical pharmacologyical issues relevant to pharmacotherapeutics are discussed. Includes dosage calculation; proper documentation of medications; classifications, indication, and side effects associated with commonly prescribed medications; administration of medication as allowed by law.
