This course introduces the student to the role of professional nursing. Historical and current concepts of nursing are discussed as they relate to the development of an increased sense of prefessionalism. The course explains the basic assumptions and beliefs of the Roy Adaptation Model. The well person in his/her response to and interaction with focal, contextual and residual stimuli is the focus of study. This focus encourages as holistic perspective on the interrelatedness of human beings, health, nursing, and environment. The nursing process is studied as a tool for the systematic collection of data and planning of nursing care. Cultural differences, values and beliefs are emphasized as the professional nurse interacts with individuals in various settings. Communication techniques, concepts of health education, and physical assessment activities utilized by the professional nurse are included. In addition, this course serves as a transition course, offering a gestalt of professional nursing for the associate degree or diploma nurse entering the program.

This course utilizes the conceptual framework and key concepts used throughout the curriculum. Part I of the Nursing Across the Life Span series examines the delivery of health care to the mother and the developing person from conception to adolescence who are experiencing complex problems and complications in these maturation developments. Family development and relationships in each developmental stage are studied in relation to the implicatons for nursing. Acute and chronic alternations in health, as well as health promotion strategies are discussed. The student uses a family centered approach in providing health promotion, health maintenance and health education for the developing family. The course provides opportunities for the student to practice in a variety of settings such as birthing centers, prenatal clinics, child health clinics, and various screening clinincs as well as in the traditional hospital units.

Family development and relationshops in each developmental stage are studied in relation to the implications for nursing. Acute and chronic alterations in health, as well as health promotion strategies will be discussed. The student will continue to use a family-centered approach in providing health promotion, health maintenance and health education for the adutl population. In addition, the student will have an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of death as the final developmental stage and the nurse's role in assisting the client and family in dying with dignity. The course provides the student opportunities to practice in a variety of settings, such as adult screening programs, hospice, and adult day care centers, and mental health facilities.
