The objective of this course is to teach students to solve realistic problems using the most readily available off-the-shelf general applications software: word processing, spreadsheets and database systems. This course is an introduction for non majors to what is meant by computer science, the impact on society of computing in the last half century, and the challenges and opportunities for advancement of man created by computer science. Introduction to numerical methods and mathematical software for scientific computation. Floating point number systems, machine precision, cancellation error, conditioning and stability.
