Study of the techniques used by law enforcement in common encounter with citizens.

Concepts, investigations process, scene management, required documentation, and case management for incidences of natural, accidental and suicidal deaths. Follows the Department of Justice National Guidelines for Death Investigations.

Overview of computer information systems. Introduces computer hardware, software, procedures, systems, and human resources and explores their integration and application in business and other segments in society. The fundamentals of computer problem solving and programming in a higher level programming language may be discussed and applied.

Introduces the fundamental concepts of structured programming. Topics include software development methodology, data types, control structures, functions, arrays, and the mechanics of running, testing, and debugging. This course assumes computer literacy.

Prerequisite: COSC 1436 Review of control structures and data types with emphasis on structured data types. Applies the object-oriented programming paradigm, focusing on the defi nition and use of classes along with the fundamentals of object-oriented design. Includes basic analysis of algorithms, searching and sorting techniques, and an introduction to software.

Prerequisite: COSC 1437 Further applications of programming techniques, introducing the fundamental concepts of data structures and algorithms. Topics include recursion, fundamental data structures (including stacks, queues, linked lists, hash tables, trees, and graphs), and algorithmic analysis.

History and philosophy of criminal justice and ethical considerations; crime defi ned; its nature and impact; overview of the criminal justice system; law enforcement; court system; prosecution and defense; trial process; corrections.

The judiciary in the criminal justice system; structure of American court system; prosecution; right to counsel; pre-trial release; grand jury, adjudication process, types and rules of evidence, sentencing.

A study of the nature of criminal law; philosophical and historical development; major defi nitions and concepts; classifi cations of crime; elements of crimes and penalties using Texas Statutes as illustrations; criminal responsibility.
