This course prepares the healthcare worker to administer basic life support (BLS) to the adult, child, and infant. This course is based upon guidelines set forth by the American Heart Association. Content areas include basic airway control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking, and the use of airway adjuncts such as the pocket mask & bag-mask. The course consists of a watch-then-practice concept. 1 hour lecture, 1 hour laboratory.

Prerequisite: Current CPR certification as an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or EMT 1000 with a "C" or better. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age and possess a regular or Honors high school diploma or a GED. This course is the first of a two course sequence required for licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). EMT 101 is designed to prepare the student to become an EMT and emphasizes emergency medical care, including skills that the EMT is permitted to provide. Topics include role and responsibilities, patient assessment, CPR, splinting, bandaging, beginning IV therapy, and medical emergencies. Current CPR certification as a healthcare provider is required prior to entry into this course. Students must have a "C" or better to progress to EMT 102. EMT 102 must be completed in the same academic year as EMT 101, or EMT 101 must be repeated. 6 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory.

(Prerequisites: EMT 101 and EMT 1000 with ¿C¿ or better. Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a regular or Honors high school diploma or a GED). This course is a continuation of EMT 101. Topics include emergency childbirth, burns, environmental emergencies, IV therapy, cardiac emergencies, and ambulance operations. Classroom and campus instruction is supplemented with experience in area hospital and ambulance services. Following completion of this course, the student must successfully complete an EMT competency written and practical examination prior to state board testing. Upon successful completion of this course and the competency testing, the student is eligible to take the State of Tennessee Basic EMT Licensure Examination. The student must complete EMT 102 in the same academic year, or the student must repeat EMT 101. Please see Criteria: State of Tennessee, Division of EMS Rule (1200-12-1-.04 and 1200-12-1-.13) pursuant to T.C.A. Tile 68, Chapter 140. 6 hours lecture, 2 hours campus laboratory per week, and 12-24 total hours (equivalent to 1-2 hours per week) during the semester for hospital/ambulance ride time.
